One Timeless Lesson from King Solomon for Today’s Entrepreneurs

ree

Biblically, King Solomon was the wealthiest and most renowned king in Israel’s history. The Queen of Sheba famously declared that his greatness far exceeded the rumors she had heard. While many know that Solomon asked God for wisdom when given a golden opportunity, what is often overlooked is the kind of wisdom he requested.

Solomon didn’t ask for generic wisdom, he asked for wisdom directly connected to his purpose: the ability to judge the people rightly, to discern between good and evil, and to govern the kingdom effectively. His focus on his divine assignment, his calling, and his purpose made all the difference. In the realm of leadership and kingdom management, no one surpassed him.

Purpose is the reason you were created. It sits at the intersection of your natural talents, your passions, and the problems you were born to solve. When entrepreneurship is anchored in purpose, it has the power to produce extraordinary, lasting results.

Don’t start a restaurant simply because it looks profitable and you can do it. Ask yourself:

  • Do I truly love cooking?

  • Do I value the experience of a great meal?

  • Do I enjoy creating memorable experiences for others?

Purpose-driven entrepreneurship is what sustains you when challenges come and what differentiates good ventures from great ones.

Here are three reasons why your entrepreneurial journey must be rooted in purpose:

1.      Entrepreneurship Requires Work: Starting and running a business is hard. It demands time, commitment, and extraordinary effort. You may go without pay, face opposition, and encounter countless setbacks. Many people quit because money was their only motivation, and they soon realize there are easier ways to earn it. To endure, your venture must be tied to your purpose. Myles Munroe, a renowned voice on purpose and vision, once said: “If you quit at the first challenge, it was never a true calling.” Ask yourself: What would I do even without recognition or compensation? What would I pursue if no one applauded? Purpose gives you the intensity to push through roadblocks, overcome discouragement, and stay the course when others give up. The winners in entrepreneurship are often not the first or the best, but they are often the last to give up.

2.      Entrepreneurship Demands Passion: Passion is essential at every stage of entrepreneurship. It motivates individuals to work a little harder, invest more time, and acquire more knowledge, and over time, that advantage compounds into exponential success. Passion drives absolute ownership, leading to significant impact. Just as a plane needs sustained momentum to lift off, entrepreneurs need sustained effort to turn a venture into a success. While passion is the engine behind momentum, purpose is the fuel that drives passion. Your purpose sustains your interest in a venture that eventually delivers breakthrough results.

3.      Entrepreneurship Requires Creativity: The entrepreneurial path is riddled with obstacles and uncertainty. There’s rarely a clear roadmap. That’s where creativity comes in, and purpose is the key that unlocks it. When your venture aligns with your purpose, you engage not just your physical energy but your full mental capacity. You begin to innovate, problem-solve, and create solutions where none existed before. As the saying goes, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Purpose fuels your curiosity, your drive to learn, and your desire to connect. Whether through reading, networking, or experimenting, your purpose feeds your creativity.

In conclusion, entrepreneurship rooted in purpose is not just more fulfilling, it’s more sustainable, impactful, and resilient. Like Solomon, when you pursue wisdom aligned with your calling, prosperity follows. Build what you were born to build. Solve the problem you were created to solve. That’s where true entrepreneurial success begins.
