The right opportunity has the power to transform your life—elevating you to leadership, increasing your visibility, and accelerating your career. But opportunities don’t just happen by chance; they are attracted to individuals who are intentional about them.
So, how do you attract the right opportunities? The first step is clarity. Be crystal clear about what you want—and what you don’t. Never hesitate to voice the types of roles and opportunities that excite you. Many people fear that being too specific will limit their options, but the reality is quite the opposite. When you are closely associated with a particular expertise, role or opportunity, you become the obvious choice when that opportunity arises.
If you try to be a jack of all trades, you might be considered for many roles—but so will everyone else. The competition will dilute your visibility, making it harder to stand out. The more specific your focus, the faster the right opportunities will find you. This is the essence of branding. Think about luxury watches—if asked to name the top five, Rolex would likely come to mind. That’s because Rolex has strategically positioned itself as synonymous with luxury.
Beyond personal branding, opportunities are constantly being created by business needs. Leaders are always on the lookout for the right people to take on challenges. And often, the first question they ask isn’t “Who can do it?” but rather, “Who is willing to do it?”
This is where the Skill-Will Matrix comes into play. People are categorized based on their skill level (high or low) and their willingness to take on tasks (high or low). Many organizational challenges stem from individuals with low willingness—they tend to be low performers or disengaged employees. On the other hand, high-will individuals are either top performers or eager learners.
If you want to attract more opportunities, start planting the right seeds now. Let people know what excites you and what doesn’t. This helps filter out the wrong opportunities while ensuring the right ones come your way.

Very powerful truth! I would love to hear more about the Skill-Will Matrix. Thank you!
Interestingly, it can be tempting to think being specific might limit your options. But, as you pointed out it brings, it's the willingness portion of it that we are sometimes tempted to overlook.
Sage advice!
