There are times in life when a career pivot becomes necessary—and this can happen for a variety of reasons. Maybe you’ve been laid off from a job you’ve held for years, one that became a central part of your identity. Perhaps you are burnt out, bored or feel like you’ve already achieved all there is in your current role. Or maybe you still love the work you do, but the culture around you has become toxic. Your efforts go unrecognized, promotions feel out of reach, and your motivation begins to wane.
How do you move on to the new when all you have known is the old?
Change is scary. It demands that we adapt, that we step into uncharted territory—and that we pivot. But fear often holds people back. Some stay stuck where they are, while others move forward unprepared and face disappointing results. So how can you pivot effectively in your career—and in life? Here are two core strategies, plus a bonus mindset shift that can guide your journey.
1. Always Be Prepared to Pivot by Investing in Transferable Skills
Preparation begins long before the moment of change. The key is to build a wide range of versatile, transferable skills that can be applied across industries. While it’s important to have technical or role-specific expertise, don’t neglect soft skills like: Effective communication, stakeholder management, emotional intelligence, stress resilience, goal orientation and accountability and consistency under pressure. These are the kinds of capabilities that make you adaptable. The broader and deeper your transferable skillset, the more opportunities you’ll be qualified for—and the easier it will be to pivot when the time comes.
2. Give It Everything You’ve Got
Often, failure isn’t due to being on the wrong path. It’s the result of not committing fully. Many people hesitate, trapped by self-doubt, and never invest the time, energy, and resources required to succeed. Unfortunately, they vacillate between many options but never absolutely commit. If you never give it what it takes, you will never get from it the success it makes. If and when you decide to pivot—go all in. Don’t second-guess yourself. Giving it what it takes means
Patience to stay the course
Perseverance through setbacks and
Determination to push forward without looking back
Think of the Biblical story of Lot’s wife—looking back caused her to lose everything even with a great future ahead of her. Your new path deserves your full attention and forward momentum. That is the only way to move forward.
See the Pivot as an Opportunity
Every pivot is not just a disruption—it’s also a doorway. A chance for growth, change, and advancement. Whether you've been laid off, feel stuck, or simply want something more meaningful, remember this: your pivot could be the start of your next great adventure. So wherever you find yourself today—at a crossroads, on the edge of something new, or recovering from a setback—remember these tips. Be prepared. Be all in. And see the pivot not as an end, but as the beginning of something greater.

I like the disruption/ doorway analogy. Perseverance will pay off in the long term
